The best weight loss meditation app depends on what drives your eating: Mochi Zen is best for emotional eating and weight because it pairs RTT-based hypnotherapy programs with food logging; Eat Right Now is the strongest pure mindful-eating app for cravings; Headspace and Calm are best for learning mindful eating alongside general stress relief; Insight Timer is the best free option. None of them burns calories. What they can change is the stress, cravings and automatic eating that derail a sensible plan.

Disclosure: this roundup is published by Mochi Zen, which is ranked first, with the reasoning shown so you can disagree. I'm Paola Mendez, certified RTT (Rapid Transformational Therapy) hypnotherapist trained by Marisa Peer, and emotional eating is the most common reason clients come to me. The other five apps are ranked for what they genuinely do well.

The Short Answer

Six apps, matched to the problem

Emotional eating and weight → Mochi Zen. Cravings you want to ride out → Eat Right Now. Learning mindful eating from scratch → Headspace. Stress eating and poor sleep → Calm. Zero budget → Insight Timer. Stopping a craving in the moment → Reveri.

Can Meditation Actually Help You Lose Weight?

Indirectly, yes. Meditation doesn't raise your metabolism, and Calm's own blog says plainly that meditation doesn't directly cause weight loss. What it can do is reduce the eating that isn't about hunger: grazing when stressed, finishing the packet on autopilot, the 9pm kitchen trip. Mindful eating teaches you to notice hunger, fullness and emotional triggers before you act on them.

The research is promising but early. In the most-cited mindful-eating app study, women using Eat Right Now reduced craving-related eating by about 40%, but it was a small feasibility study (104 participants) with no control group. Hypnosis, the approach Mochi Zen uses, has a longer research record specifically for weight: Kirsch's 1996 reanalysis found that adding hypnosis to behavioral treatment produced 14.88 lbs lost versus 6.03 lbs at final assessment, although a competing reanalysis found a smaller effect. We weigh both in does hypnotherapy work for weight loss?

The honest takeaway: any of these apps works best alongside a sensible eating and movement plan, not instead of one.

1. Mochi Zen: For Emotional Eating and Weight

$15/month · $120/year · free tier + 7-day trial · iPhone, Android and web

Ranked first because it's the only app here built specifically around weight and emotional eating, and the only one that combines the mind work with tracking. Mochi Zen is an RTT-based hypnotherapy app for weight loss, emotional eating, anxiety and sleep. Instead of general meditations, it gives you sequenced programs for weight, emotional eating and food noise, listened to daily, that work on the beliefs that made food the answer to stress or comfort in the first place.

Alongside the sessions it includes an AI photo meal scanner, typed-sentence logging, a USDA food search, exercise and water tracking, a macros calculator, and a weight tracker, plus a journal that links mood to eating. That lets you see which feelings drive which meals, which a meditation app alone can't show you.

Honest limits: it's hypnotherapy rather than classic sitting meditation, so if you specifically want to learn to meditate, pair it with Headspace or Insight Timer. And like every program, it takes weeks of daily listening, not days.

2. Eat Right Now: For Craving-Driven Eating

$24.99/month · $99.99/6 months · $129.99/year · 7-day trial · iOS 4.8★

The strongest pure mindful-eating app. Developed from Dr. Judson Brewer's lab research and now run by Sharecare, Eat Right Now teaches you to get curious about a craving and ride it out rather than fight it, through short daily lessons, a real-time craving tool and a community. It is the source of the "40% reduction in craving-related eating" figure, from the feasibility study above.

Honest limits: it's among the pricier options, the evidence is early and uncontrolled, and Dr. Brewer has had financial ties to the app's makers. There's no food logging. Best for people whose problem is clearly cravings for specific foods.

3. Headspace: For Learning Mindful Eating

$12.99/month · $69.99/year · 7-day trial (14 on annual) · iOS 4.8★

Headspace's 30-day Mindful Eating course is the best introduction to eating mindfully if you've never meditated. It explains hunger and fullness cues step by step, in the same friendly style as the rest of the app, and you get Headspace's whole stress, sleep and focus library with it. If stress eating is linked to anxiety, its direct-to-consumer therapy option is a useful extra.

Honest limits: weight is a side topic, there's no food tracking, and one course isn't a program. Our Mochi Zen vs Headspace comparison covers when to use which.

Noticing the urge is step one. Changing why it shows up every evening is step two.

4. Calm: For Stress Eating and Sleep

$14.99–$16.99/month · $69.99–$79.99/year · 7-day trial · iOS 4.8★

Calm earns its place because poor sleep and stress both drive overeating, and Calm is the best app for both. It also has a Mindful Eating program by Dr. Michelle May, founder of the Am I Hungry? mindful-eating program, and a mindful eating series by Tamara Levitt. If your eating gets worse when you're exhausted or wound up, better nights may help more than any eating-specific content.

Honest limits: the eating content is a small part of a huge relaxation library, and there's no tracking. For how Calm and Headspace compare overall, see Headspace vs Calm.

5. Insight Timer: For Free

Free core library · MemberPlus $9.99/month or $59.99/year · iOS 4.9★

Insight Timer's free library includes hundreds of weight-loss and mindful-eating meditations and affirmations from independent teachers. It's the best way to try the idea without spending anything, and to discover which voice and style work for you.

Honest limits: quality varies widely, some tracks make promises no meditation can keep, and nothing is sequenced, so you'll need to build your own routine.

6. Reveri: For In-the-Moment Cravings

$24.99/month · $99.99/year · 7-day trial · iOS 4.5★

Reveri's short self-hypnosis sessions, from Stanford's Dr. David Spiegel, include an "Eat Well" exercise designed for use in the morning and before meals. It's a good craving interrupter and covers stress and sleep too. It sits last here only because weight is one topic among many, with no program or tracking. Our Reveri review has the full breakdown.

How Do You Choose the Right Weight Loss Meditation App?

Start by noticing when your off-plan eating happens, for one week. The pattern points to the app:

  • After stressful moments or hard conversations: emotional eating. Look for an app that works on the emotion behind it, such as Mochi Zen, with Headspace or Calm for day-to-day stress.
  • When a specific food is in the house: cravings. Eat Right Now's ride-it-out approach and Reveri's quick sessions suit this.
  • Late at night, especially when tired: often a sleep and exhaustion problem as much as an eating one. Calm's sleep content, or Mochi Zen's sleep program, may help more than eating-specific tracks.
  • Constantly, with food on your mind all day: that's food noise. A daily program aimed at the source usually beats occasional sessions.

Then check two practical things: whether you want food tracking in the same app (only Mochi Zen here offers it), and whether you'll really use a paid app daily. If not, begin with Insight Timer or a free trial and upgrade once the habit sticks. Give any choice at least two to three weeks of daily use before judging it; most people quit these apps after a handful of sessions, far too early to see a change in eating.

Which Weight Loss Meditation Apps Should You Skip?

Two apps that show up high in app-store searches for this term deserve a warning:

  • Ultimate Weight Loss Hypnosis (iOS): its sessions may be fine, but the app hasn't been updated since 2019. Buying sessions in an unmaintained app is a risk.
  • Hypno Weight Loss Hypnotherapy (Android): claims it helps you "lose weight while you sleep" with results "in just one week." No meditation or hypnosis app can promise that, and claims like these are a red flag.

As a rule, be wary of any app that promises specific weight loss, fast results or effortless change. The research supports hypnosis and mindfulness as helpers for a plan, not as replacements for one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best weight loss meditation app?

It depends on what drives your eating. Mochi Zen is best for emotional eating and weight because it combines RTT-based hypnotherapy programs with food logging. Eat Right Now is best for cravings, Headspace for learning mindful eating, Calm for stress and sleep, and Insight Timer if you want something free.

Can meditation really help you lose weight?

Indirectly. Meditation does not burn calories, but it can reduce eating driven by stress, cravings and habit. A feasibility study of the Eat Right Now app found craving-related eating fell about 40%, though without a control group. It works best alongside a sensible eating and movement plan.

Is there a free weight loss meditation app?

Insight Timer is the best free option, with hundreds of weight-loss and mindful-eating meditations from independent teachers. Quality varies and nothing is sequenced. Mochi Zen has a free tier, and Headspace, Calm, Eat Right Now and Reveri all offer free trials of seven days or more.

Is hypnosis or meditation better for weight loss?

They work differently. Meditation teaches you to notice cravings and emotional triggers without acting on them. Hypnosis aims to change the associations behind them. Hypnosis has more research specifically for weight, including Kirsch's 1996 reanalysis, though its effect size is debated. Many people use both.

Does Headspace have a weight loss program?

Not a weight loss program as such. Headspace has a 30-day Mindful Eating course that teaches you to recognise hunger, fullness and emotional eating triggers, plus its general stress and sleep library. It does not include food logging or weight tracking. Therapy is available separately, with insurance accepted.

Does Calm help with weight loss?

Calm isn't a weight loss app, and its own blog says meditation doesn't directly cause weight loss. It does offer a Mindful Eating program by Dr. Michelle May and helps with stress and sleep, both of which drive overeating. It has no food tracking or weight-specific program.

Are weight loss hypnosis apps that promise fast results legit?

Be cautious. No app can make you lose weight while you sleep or guarantee results in a week, and claims like that are a red flag. Research supports hypnosis and mindfulness as helpers for a behavioral plan. Also check when an app was last updated before paying for it.
